Day 6: 1st day "on duty"

Every day some poor schmuck has to be on duty - so hello to that schmuck.  I guess once we are on the water it will change but today my job was to help the Steward (super nice lady, Gail, who I will tell you more about another day) with cleaning and food prep and doing the dishes.  Since today was Saturday we had a bunch of volunteers and ordered pizza (Stevo's on State St. it was really good but no Ianni's - go Latang w/pepperoni!) and I had to go pick it up.

Also I have to check the ship several times during the day to...you know...make sure it's not sinking or some other horrible fate has befallen our lovely ship.  That went well and maybe I can remember the five compartments I have to check:  1.  fore peak  2. galley   3. berth   4. ward    5.  captain's cabin .  They are unique to themselves - sealed off from each other by watertight bulkheads or doors.  This is safety thing.

So that's basically duty.  How about a word for the day:  Thump Mat.  A thump mat is a knotted heavy mat used for protecting the ship from friction or banging doors or loads on the gant lines.  Ah, I didn't take a photo of one but here is one from the interwebs:

We used this yesterday when we were taking the stanchions (support beams) down in preparation of putting the yards up

Here is just a random photo of the line stowage in the subbasement:
This is only a portion of the line.  I wish I had a dime for each foot of rope/line/cord around here I would have...I would have...well I would have a lot of quarters.

Keep reading intrepid heroes.  I don't know if I'm going to blog on Sunday's, since its our day off, but I will get back to it as best I can Monday.

Ahoy
